Call for Applicants: Gettysburg Strategic Leader Staff Ride October 4-6, 2023

September 1, 2023

The Curriculum of Peace, War, and Defense calls for applications for students interested in attending the Strategic Leader Staff Ride (SLSR) at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle and Gettysburg. The SLSR is a leadership development program offered to increase public awareness of the high quality of Army leadership education. The program is conducted at the Gettysburg battlefield and employs a proven experiential method at the U. S. Army War College to educate senior military and Interagency leaders. The experience will encapsulate such leadership topics as:

  • Leadership style (and when to change it).
  • Empowerment of trusted agents.
  • Communicating leader vision and ensuring alignment.
  • Avoiding cognitive bias and systems of denial.
  • Common mistakes in effective team-building.
  • Separating personal and professional relationships.
  • Weighing risk vs. reward.
  • Controlling “the narrative.”
  • Transforming tactical success into strategic effect.

From soldier to corporate executive, these leadership competencies remain enduring, relevant, and valuable regardless of profession. The (SLSR) program will cover all lodging, transportation, and meal requirements while in Carlisle and Gettysburg. The Curriculum will provide successful applicants with transportation to the SLSR and return to Chapel Hill. Applications should include names, PIDs, academic standing, and a brief statement (500 words) of interest.

Please also include documentation that you are vaccinated against COVID-19. If conditions change and we cannot travel, we will let you know as soon as possible.  Please send all materials to bapat@unc.edu no later than September 14, 2023.
